The True “World” Cornhole Rankings According to the Cornholeblogger

So it’s pretty clear to everyone who plays or follows the ACO that the current CornyForty rankings are not close to accurate. With the addition of “Spotlight” tournaments this year you can now “buy” points and therefore buy your ranking. Along with that in typical ACO fashion they threw in a bonus tournament for points in Milwaukee that was initially not suppose to offer CornForty points. So with that in mind I wanted to come up with a way to accurately rank the performance of the ACO players thus far this year and I think I have a pretty accurate way of doing this.

The Formula:

The formula is pretty straight forward. In order to counteract the “buying” of points, I simply took the average points earned for Spotlight tournaments as well as Master Events. I also threw out the Milwaukee tournament as it was not supposed to count at the beginning (sorry Sean Short who had a great showing up there). One thing I am a fan of is the SCR. I think the ACO got this right as the SCR provides a great way to rank players without them playing a single game. While it obviously doesn’t tell the hole story as some players play games much better than they “test”, it is still quite accurate. There is a reason that the big 3 (Guy, Vanderver and Atha) are the only ones to throw 130+.

So the formula is simply this:

(SCR divided by 2) + (Avg points earned in a “Masters” tournament) + (Avg points earned in a “Spotlight” tournament)

Here are the oddly accurate results (click on the image to see the full list). There are some flaws though, Sutton and Tucker have yet to play a Spotlight event, so that costs them probably 3-4 points and a few spots in the rankings, but for the most part, this is pretty accurate. I only looked at the top 30 in the Cornyforty as it stands today (5/12) so there could be another couple of players that would have snuck in.
